Occoquan VA

Occoquan is a historic waterfront town in Prince William County Virginia located on the banks of the Occoquan River not too far from Washington DC.  It was founded originally in 1734 as a trading post. The name “Occoquan” comes from an Algonquin Indian word meaning “at the end of the water”…which is appropriate for its placement along the Occoquan River.  It was established as a major industrialist town, featuring grist mills and tobacco warehouses. Of note of this industrious town was The Merchant’s mill, which was the first automated grist mill in the nation, and operated for 175 years until it was destroyed in a fire. In the Civil War, it was a neutral zone for postal service and shortly thereafter, as a result of a rise in sediment or silting…the use of Occoquan as a port for shipping ended.  Today, Occoquan serves as a thriving artist community with its quaint shops, ghost walks and waterfront community.
